Designer Label: Ruby Ellen Designs
Alberta Fashion Week kicked off with the whimsical bridal wear of Ruby Ellen Johnson, of Calgary, AB.
Johnson was born with a desire to create. She had been sewing and making clothes since she was a toddler. Inspired by a sewing and design course in high school, she then went to create her first wedding dress at age 17.
Years later she was given the opportunity to open her own design studio and pursue sewing full-time. Fuelled by the mantra that “every woman can look great in clothing that suits her body”, she is driven to design the perfect dress to flatter each woman’s individual beauty, and specializes in dressing hard-to-fit bodies.
At each step from the initial vision, to the selection of fabrics, to the meticulous fitting of each and every seam, Johnson works closely with her customers to ensure each lady looks and feels beautiful on her special day.
Her secret lies in her confidence, to march to the beat of her own drums, as her sunflower yellow dress illustrates her vision. She is inspired by fun, interesting texture and color.
One of her gown featured a removable bottom, while her fairy-like dress came out in an interpretative dance, floating across that runway with a carefree elegance.
My favorite from her collection: The strapless school bus yellow long dress with a black and white check board bodice.
